The Right Move in

Thoroughbred Investment

Purchasing Agents

Dr. Kristian Rhein and Jonathan “Finn” Green have joined forces as Empire Thoroughbreds, offering reliable and unparalleled Thoroughbred bloodstock services for equine selections at public auctions and private sales. Their combined experience has incorporated all aspects of the Thoroughbred industry, making their partnership unique. Whether you are new to Thoroughbred ownership or looking for an agent with a fresh perspective, Empire Thoroughbreds can serve you with the purchase of weanlings, yearlings, horses of racing age and broodmares.

In September of 2011, a horse by the name of Mucho Macho Man first brought Kristian and Finn together. Hired on after his loss in the Belmont Stakes, Kristian and Finn respectively began working with each other as veterinarian and racing manager for the eventual 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner. Through their combined communication, diligence and horsemanship, Kristian and Finn worked with Kathy Ritvo to bring the best out of Mucho Macho Man. Making history in the process as she became the first female trainer to win the Breeder’s Cup Classic. On behalf of the owners, Finn also privately negotiated both the acquisition and sale of the racing and breeding interests in Mucho Macho Man.

In order to be successful at any level, the horse must come first.

Kristian Rhein, D.V.M.

Kristian is a horseman who also happens to be a distinguished veterinarian. He has his own veterinary practice at Belmont Park that he started in 2015. As an Equine Racetrack Practitioner, he has worked with many top trainers and equine athletes, from Classic winners to Eclipse Award Champions.

Growing up, his family ritual was to watch the Triple Crown races. Gathering around the television for the post parade, they would make their selections for the ensuing race while portraits of Triple Crown winners looked down from their walls. As Kristian grew older with an interest in veterinary medicine, he naturally gravitated toward Thoroughbred racehorses. It was Kristian’s hope that he could make a difference in the profession by assuring that theses magnificent animals had the best care and avoided injury.

During summers through veterinary school at North Carolina State, Kristian pursued his passion at Overbrook Farm where he was able to be involved in all aspects of a first-class Thoroughbred farm. He worked with world-renowned veterinarians and was around legendary stallions like Storm Cat. Kristian also volunteered much of his time at Gluck Equine Research Center and equine hospitals like Rood & Riddle, Hagyard, Davis and McGee. Furthermore, Kristian completed a surgery and medicine internship at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital (referred to as the Mayo Clinic for horses) and recieved a double certification for Equine Acupuncture from the Chi Institute, becoming a certified veterinary acupuncturist.

Kristian’s passion for the racetrack took him to a job with Dr. James Hunt at Belmont Park. Not only did he work with top trainers and care for dozens of G1 winners, including Invasor, I‘ll Have Another and Super Saver, but he also performed sales work for those same clients at the Saratoga Yearling Sale. Watching top trainers’ equine preferences both on the racetrack and in the sales ring helped him develop a keen eye for Thoroughbred talent.

Jonathan “Finn” Green

Finn comes from a family of noteworthy horsemen and horsewomen. He learned horsemanship skills caring for and growing up around Hall Of Fame Inductees and Champions at the famed Greentree Stud where his father, Robert “Bob” Green, was the manager for nearly 30 years. His mother, Patricia Headley-Green, grew up on a Thoroughbred farm owned by Finn’s granddad Hal Price Headley, a renowned Thoroughbred breeder and leading founder of Keeneland.

In his early twenties, as managing owner of family-owned Mint Lane Farm, Finn as agent sold the broodmare Two Rings for a then public auction world record of $4,500,000. Finn also managed the daily care of Kentucky Derby Winner Foolish Pleasure during a six year span of his stallion career, including at Spendthrift Farm. Finn was in charge of the yearling, public sales and stallion divisions at Spendthrift while Triple Crown winner Affirmed and more than forty other stallions stood there (Raise a Native, Gallant Man, Caro, etc.).

In the early 2000’s Finn transitioned into focusing on the acquisition and syndication, racing and breeding of two turn Thoroughbred fillies and mares. Notably, he purchased the eventual dam of GSW, G1P and current stallion MAJESTIC CITY. Finn also fell in love with, and became the known under-bidder of the great Thoroughbred race mare, ZENYATTA.

Finn continues to operate his deWaal Thoroughbreds, LLC, a consulting and management company that provides contracted services focused on plan and goal based-process for Thoroughbred industry participants.

I'm super excited! Not just from the filly, because I really love her, but also from the process we went through. We didn't panic and then try to throw crazy money.
